The Art of Overtaking

The art of overtaking is just a part of the racecraft tips highlighted in this week’s Racecraft & Race Cars Roundup. I also have details on the new Corvette GT3 Evo package and more.

The Standings Donโ€™t Tell the Whole Story: Who Is Doing More With Less in F2 and F3?

Driver Development at FIA Formula 3

A driverโ€™s position in the championship standings can tell you who scored the most points, but it doesnโ€™t necessarily tell you who is developing the most. โ€œThe Standings Donโ€™t Tell the Whole Storyโ€ from the Youth & Motorsports STEM Foundation makes the case for looking beyond results when evaluating young drivers, taking into account factors such as progression, consistency, racecraft, adaptability and the quality of opportunities available to them. For driver development, that broader perspective is important: a championship position is an outcome, while the underlying skills and trajectory can reveal much more about a driverโ€™s potential.

How to Master the Art of Overtaking

From the April 2000 issue of Grassroots Motorsports, Tim Sharp looks at how to master the art of overtaking. “A great race driver adjusts to the unique variations in each race. He is both an offensive and defensive player simultaneously. He is both hunter and prey. He must know when to follow and when to attack. He must assess the strengths and weaknesses of each competitor. He must be an expert at psychological warfare.”

How Driver Rotations Work in Endurance Racing

Unlike most motorsport disciplines where a single driver competes for the entire race, endurance racing shares a single car among multiple drivers across a long event, and managing that rotation is its own strategic challenge. Backfire Racing explains how driver rotations work in endurance racing.

Safety Cars and Restarts

Safety cars and restarts decide a remarkable share of race results, and not all junior driver trains for them. Watch any championship and count how many positions change hands in the three laps around an interruption, then ask how much deliberate practice went into those moments. The answer more often than not is none.

Dan Wells from Drivers Lab explains how to deal with safety cars and restarts in a race.

Writing Your Way to Driving Faster

Writing about driving can actually make you a better driver. In “The Write Speed,” Ross Bentley argues that putting driving experiences, techniques and observations into words forces you to think more deeply about what you are doing behind the wheelโ€”and, in turn, understand it better. Bentleyโ€™s own experience backs up the idea: years of regular writing helped sharpen both his ability to explain driving and his own understanding of it. For drivers focused on continuous development, the takeaway is simple but valuable: reflection is part of training, and writing detailed notes about technique, track experiences and areas for improvement can become another form of driver development.

Lando Norris Reveals How McLaren Hypercar Test Sharpens His Formula 1 Skills

Lando Norris is proving that stepping outside the Formula 1 arena can sharpen his racecraft, as demonstrated by his recent test in McLarenโ€™s cutting-edge Hypercar. The reigning world champion took control of the MCL-HY at Portugalโ€™s Algarve circuit last week, clocking 38 laps to familiarize himself with the World Endurance Championshipโ€™s premier prototype ahead of McLarenโ€™s eagerly anticipated 2027 Hypercar campaign. Despite the brief test, Norris was struck by the vehicleโ€™s complexity and adaptability compared to the rigid parameters of Formula 1 machinery.

The Engineering Challenges of GT3 Gearbox Design

In this article, Ricardo’s motorsport experts explain how gearboxes are engineered to withstand endurance racing’s toughest conditions.

โ€˜GT3 is a category that is often described as customer racing, but in reality, it is endurance racing under the harshest operating conditions,โ€™ reveals Connor Murray, Motorsport Sales Lead at Ricardo. โ€˜When using racing as a proving ground to validate components, nothing comes close to the distances travelled in endurance championships, so surviving that is the biggest challenge. GT3 cars also need to cope with multiple drivers and their different driving styles, balance of performance restrictions and the varying characteristics of racetracks around the world.โ€™

Will the Upcoming JS P228 Lead Ligier Out of the LMP2 Wilderness?

Last month, Ligier stunned the endurance racing world when it announced that leading LMP2 teams Inter Europol Competition, Algarve Pro Racing, and Panis Racing had all committed to race with the upcoming Ligier JS P228 in 2028.

Among the many people at Ligier who would have been jumping for joy with this announcement is Mo Murray, the CEO of Ligier Automotive North America (LANA).

โ€œWe absolutely need and want to recover that market share,โ€ said Murray. โ€œSo does the ACO. They want to see more diversity in the field, and thatโ€™s good for everybody.โ€

Sepang’s Second Act: F1 is Returning, But Local Motorsport Never Left

Sepang’s Second Act: F1 Is Returning, But Local Motorsport Never Left offers a useful reminder that a circuitโ€™s importance to motorsport extends well beyond the international series that race there. While Formula 1โ€™s return to Sepang is grabbing the headlines, the circuit has spent the past nine years developing Malaysiaโ€™s grassroots scene through karting, junior championships, esports, endurance racing and local teams. That ecosystem has helped keep the venue relevant while creating opportunities for emerging drivers and riders. For anyone interested in race driver development, Sepangโ€™s story demonstrates how a strong local motorsport infrastructure can provide the foundation from which talent can progress to higher levels of competition.

Of the 30 drivers who competed in Eurocup-3โ€™s opening round at Le Castellet, seven had switched over from GB3โ€™s 2025 grid. In the Monza paddock last month, Feeder Series spoke to some of them to find out why they moved for 2026.

Whatโ€™s a Vintage Car Rally Really Like?

What is a vintage car rally really like? Back in 2018, Esquire Magazine took part in the Louis Vuitton Dolomites Classic Run to find out. “Rally racing in vintage cars is not about speed but about time, something that requires pinpoint accuracy arriving at the time-stamp points in the overall course and, most critically, in the regularities, fiendishly short time-over-distance sections in which crossing the line just a few hundredths of a seconds lateโ€”or earlyโ€”earns strict penalties.”

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Expands Motorsport Lab Collaboration with Exclusive 2027 European Land Programs

Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the world’s leading ultra-luxury cruise line, has expanded its collaboration with Motorsport Lab to introduce four exclusive pre- and post-cruise programs across seven European voyages in 2027.

Designed for automotive enthusiasts and travelers seeking immersive destination experiences, the new collection invites guests to partake in the celebrated motoring cultures of Barcelona, England’s Goodwood Estate and Italy’s Motor Valley through supercar and classic-car driving, private automotive access, motorsport activities, regional cuisine, and destination-led cultural experiences.

“The most meaningful travel experiences connect guests with the people, culture, and passions that define a destination,” said Wesley D’Silva, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “Through our expanded collaboration with Motorsport Lab, guests can go beyond traditional sightseeing to experience some of Europe’s most iconic automotive regions through exclusive access, expert guidance and unforgettable moments.”

Curated and led by Motorsport Lab, the collection includes two distinct Motorsport Magic experiences in Barcelona, House of Motorsports at Goodwood in England and Italy’s Supercar Escape in Bologna. Each experience extends the Regent journey beyond the ship with highly personalized access and thoughtfully designed programming centered on the character of each destination.

The new programs build on previous Motorsport Lab-curated experiences. In 2025, guests took part in supercar driving and private automotive access in Barcelona, drove the Monaco Grand Prix street circuit in exotic cars and journeyed into Italy’s Motor Valley for Ferrari and Lamborghini experiences complemented by destination-inspired dining.

“We are incredibly grateful that Regent has trusted Motorsport Lab to continue creating these experiences for their guests,” said Ray Chang, Founder and CEO of Motorsport Lab. “The 2027 programs invite guests to experience motorsport culture from the inside, whether driving modern supercars or taking the wheel of a classic Porsche in Barcelona, discovering the heritage of Goodwood, or exploring the extraordinary automotive culture of Italy’s Motor Valley.”
