Becoming a Professional Race Driver
Creating The Next IndyCar Star
Meet the man who has developed future IndyCar talent through his USF Pro Championships which has seen the likes of Dan Wheldon, Kyle Kirkwood, Christian Rasmussen and more come through its ranks.
The Roles of Reserve, Test and Development Drivers
Professional race drivers do not just constitute the drivers taking the grid on race day, they also include acting as reserve, test and development drivers for a race team. Though these roles may seem unglamorous, they are essential for any team. Here are two articles that explain the roles in depth.
- Inside a Formula E Race Weekend as a Test and Development Driver (It’s Race week)
- The Reality Of Being An F1 Reserve Driver With Luke Browning (Paddock Journal)
Jared Thomas Shifts Focus to Race Driver Development
After seven seasons of professional Mazda MX-5 Cup competition, two-time champion Jared Thomas is shifting more of his focus toward developing the next generation of race drivers. Beginning in 2027, Thomas will take on an expanded role in coaching, engineering and driver development at JTR Motorsports Engineering, the team he helped build into a championship-winning operation. Its development pathway takes drivers from MX-5 Cup through Porsche Sprint Challenge and Porsche Carrera Cup, with the ultimate goal of progressing to IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge. Thomas will continue his own racing career in Michelin Pilot Challenge while using his experience behind the wheel and technical expertise to help other drivers advance.
How British F4 Drivers are Leveraging F4 Saudi Arabia
When F4 Saudi Arabia restarted late last year, it did so with little public communication or fanfare. One thrilling season later, several of its 2025 graduates have taken the British F4 world by storm, bolstered by their experience in the sands and drylands of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Feeder Series spoke to Kit Belofsky, Lewis Wherrell and Scott Kin Lindblom over summer about their experiences in both series.
While F4 Saudi Arabia is turning into an effective development option for drivers, current geopolitical developments in the region may give some drivers pause.
Ginetta GT Championship: Accelerating Driver Progression
In recent years, the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT Championship has established itself a key feeder series into the British GT Championship, with a number of talented Ginetta graduates going on to enjoy success on their transition to endurance racing.
Since its introduction in 2023, the Ginetta GT Championship has been focused on accelerating driver development. Close, competitive racing in powerful Ginetta G56 GTP8’s increase on-track ability and off-track engineering knowledge, to produce ready-made GT drivers.
SRO Motorsports Group taking operational control of the Ginetta UK Championships for 2026 and beyond has served to further strengthen the position of the GT Championship as an important feeder series into British GT and the wider SRO pyramid.
You can read more about the program at the Ginetta website here.
Pro-Am GT Racing

In a recent LinkedIn post, Dan Wells of Drivers Lab talks about his experience with Pro-Am racing. “The format, for those outside it, pairs a professional with a paying amateur, a businessman or enthusiast racing for the love of it, sharing one car across a race. The pairing wins or loses together, which means the professional’s real task is not simply to be quick. It is to make the whole package quick, and most of that package is another human being with a demanding day job and a fraction of your seat time.”
Aussie Karting Talent Joins FARA as Candidate Driver for Formula 4
Following a positive F4 screening test, Kristian Zonta has become the latest member of the Formelaustria Race Academy. Zonta, not related to former F1 driver Ricardo, hails from Northeast Australian racing capital Townsville, and gained FARA’s attention with good karting results Down Under and his visit to the legendary Winfield Racing School in France. He was invited by FARA to a F4 screening test at Slovakiaring and has now signed a membership contract with Austria’s only professional junior driver programme.
“Kristian definitely has great potential, so we are happy that he has joined the Formelaustria Race Academy family,” Program Director Harry Miltner was content.“
“Moving from karts to F4 cars is quite a big step and it takes time to adapt. It’s our job to work with Kristian, nurture his talent, and help him cope with the steep learning curve as best and as fast as possible.”
Driver Longevity in Motorsport: The Veteran Driver Paradox
Race drivers are competing at the highest levels for longer than ever, thanks to improved training, nutrition, recovery methods and safety, alongside the advantages of experience. But greater longevity presents a paradox for drivers and their sponsors: veteran racers offer credibility, brand recognition, consistency and proven judgment, yet have fewer seasons remaining in which to deliver value.
Drawing on examples including Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Marc Márquez, RTR Sports explores how age, motivation and risk management shape a driver’s career, and why sponsorship strategies must build lasting connections with teams, championships and fans rather than relying solely on an individual driver.
Treating Your Career as a Start-Up Featuring Mac Clark

Last week on the Motorsport Prospects Podcast, I chatted with Canadian race driver Mac Clark who delves into the business side of racing and explains why you should be treating your racing career as a start-up.
In this episode we discuss:
- Why you need to treat your racing brand as a start up.
- Why B2B deals are better than traditional sponsorship.
- Why you need a business-first mindset when not at the track.
- Plus much more!

Claire Jedrek on Racing, Precision and the Mindset Behind Performance
What can motorsport teach us about precision, resilience and performing under pressure? In this interview with Harper’s Bazaar Singapore, former race driver Claire Jedrek reflects on the lessons racing has taught her and how its demands have shaped her approach to life. Her perspective offers a reminder that the skills developed on track—including discipline, adaptability and decision-making under pressure—can translate well beyond motorsport.
Tracing the Female Trailblazers of Formula 3
From Alice Powell’s historic points finish to Sophia Flörsch’s modern-day campaigns, It’s Race Week takes a closer look at the women who have tested and raced in GP3 and Formula 3.
Shanghai Date Desired for Third Formula E Women’s Test
Formula E will continue to promote female talent in its Gen4 era, but a third female test session will not take place, as it has done in the last two years, at the pre-season test. Formula E Notebook has learned that hosting the event on the Monday after the Shanghai E-Prix in July of 2027 is currently the favored option with teams suggesting that the circuit would be the most suitable for the occasion.
How Susie Wolff is shaping F1 Academy
Susie Wolff is helping create more space for women in a sport that has historically given them very little of it. As Managing Director of F1 Academy, she is challenging the structures that have made motorsport difficult for female drivers to progress through, from karting to the opportunities available further up the ladder.
Her influence is not about creating a separate space for women, but making sure there is a clearer path for those who want to compete in a sport that has too often treated their presence as the exception. The Slipstream Effect looks at how Susie Wolff is shaping F1 Academy.
F1 Is Searching for Its First Female Success Story
This piece from Bloomberg looks at F1 Academy and the route for women into the top tier of motorsport. There are questions the whole industry is asking, and it is good to see the topic getting mainstream, serious coverage.
F1 Academy Rookie Test Wrapped Documentary
Follow F1 Academy’s rookies and go behind-the-scenes from the F1 Academy training camp at Loughborough University all the way through to on-track testing in Navarra in Spain. “We put our rookies through their paces on an equal playing field to help them reach their full potential and uncover potential drivers for our 2027 grid.” You can watch the documentary on YouTube here.
Tinder Partners with Formula E to Support Female Motorsport Drivers
Earlier this year, Tinder became the first-ever dating app to partner with Formula E, becoming the ‘Official Sparking Connections Partner’ of the 2026 Hankook London E-Prix. Now, following the season finale race weekend in London, Tinder is launching a brand-new content series starring some of the world’s leading women motorsport talent.
The partnership with Formula E marks Tinder’s first-ever move into motorsport, a deliberate choice to enter a historically male-dominated space, whilst shining a light on the women changing the face of the sport.
Filmed across the 2026 Hankook Berlin E-Prix and 2026 Hankook London E-Prix, Tinder’s new flagship content series, ‘Ready. Set. Spark,’ puts three of the sport’s standout drivers – Sophia Flörsch, Marta García and Abbi Pulling behind the wheel for high-speed, unfiltered conversations about love, life and racing. Joined by a line-up of all-women presenters, each driver will navigate high-speed corners whilst tackling candid questions about what it takes to live life in the fast lane.
Each has already broken barriers in their respective careers. Germany’s Sophia Flörsch is an Alpine Academy driver, Opel GSE Formula E test and development driver, and the first woman to score points in the FIA Formula 3 Championship. Spain’s Marta García became the inaugural F1 Academy Champion in 2023 before making the leap to endurance racing as part of the trailblazing all-women Iron Dames. Britain’s Abbi Pulling is the 2024 F1 Academy Driver’s Champion, Nissan Formula E rookie and simulator driver and the first woman to win a GB3 Championship race – where she currently competes.
The series taps into a fast-growing passion among singles: motorsport mentions on Tinder rose 1,164% over the course of 2025, showing how the sport is becoming part of how people express themselves and spark connections.
Tinder’s move into Formula E reflects the growing crossover between the sport’s fanbase and the dating world. Formula E’s audience is 49% women, proving that women aren’t just tuning into the sport—they are defining its culture, from the grandstands to the grid.
Turmoil at the FFSA
The Fédération Française du Sport Automobile (FFSA)—France’s national motorsport federation—is currently embroiled in an unprecedented governance scandal that has threatened the revocation of its state sports ministry agreement, effectively risking the future oversight of French motorsport according to French newspaper Le Parisien. The crisis involves an intense power struggle between former leadership networks and newer executives.

Karting Africa Showrun in Angola Brings Together 39 Drivers from 14 African Countries

The Karting Africa Showrun in Angola brought together 39 drivers from 14 African countries, selected through their National Sporting Authorities (ASNs). Held over 6 – 11 October 2026, it is a milestone for the continent’s emerging Pan-African karting platform.
The initiative was presented to the global motor sport community during the FIA Conference in Macau earlier this year and has developed considerably since. The Showrun is hosted in Angola with the support of the Government of Angola and the FIA Member Club in Angola, the Federação Angolana de Desporto Motorizado (FADM). It reflects the growing engagement of African ASNs in creating accessible, structured opportunities for young drivers across the region.
Karting Africa was founded by Wesleigh Orr, who has spent years working to create greater opportunities for African drivers and to build a motor sport platform designed around the continent.
Rodrigo Rocha, FIA Vice-President for Sport (Africa), said: ” 14 African countries coming together through their ASNs is a very encouraging sign for the future of motor sport on the continent. Karting is the natural starting point for young drivers, and this Showrun shows what is possible when the region works together. We are grateful to the Government of Angola and to FADM for hosting the event and for their strong support.”
The Importance of Environment in Race Driver Development
Developing a successful race driver takes more than natural talent and time on track. The environment surrounding a young driver, from family support to the people guiding their development, can play a crucial role in shaping their progress and long-term prospects. In this article, Vroomkart explores why the right environment matters when raising and developing the next generation of racing talent.
